Gertrude (Stelling) Wilhelmsen, who competed in the women's javelin and discus at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, East Germany, signs a book at city hall in Wuppertal, West Germany. Wilhelmsen, a Puyallup native who graduated from Puyallup High School, placed seventh in the women's javelin and eighth in the discus at the 1936 Olympics. She placed fourth in the javelin at the 1932 United States Olympic Trials, missing an Olympic berth by one spot. Wilhelmsen also competed in softball, basketball and golf, and was inducted into the Tacoma-Pierce County Baseball/Softball Hall of Fame as a fastpitch player in 1994.
