Description

The Wheeler Osgood basketball team won the Tacoma Amateur Basketball Championship in 1932 with Fred Osmers, center, among its lineup. To win the championship, Wheeler Osgood would have had to defeat many other teams made up of former high school and college players who spent their time competing at the amateur level in the years before professional basketball was widely popular and well before televised games consumed people’s time and interest. Teams like Wheeler Osgood, the Cammarano Bottlers and John Dower Lumber Company competed against each other and would occasionally play games against barnstorming national teams that would compete at places like the Lincoln High School gymnasium. Some of those teams would be — often defined by the ethnicity of the players — the House of David, Olson’s Terrible Swedes and, of course, The Harlem Globetrotters. Fred Osmers is in the middle of the picture forth from the right.
