Description

Prior to the Silver Skis Race back in 1934, skiers in this black-and-white photo prepared for the 3.4-mile race that began at Camp Muir at 10,000 feet and finished at Paradise at 5,400 feet. The old stone cabin that still stands can be seen in this black-and-white photo taken in the area the skiers were walking around in the rock prior to the race. The Silver Skis Race began in 1934 and it was called the “Kentucky Derby of downhill racing.” Don Fraser won the first Silver Skis race with a time of 10 minutes and 49 seconds. Only 44 of the 60 skiers who started the race finished. The race was canceled in 1943, 1944 and 1945 because of World War II. The last race was held in 1948 as turnout dropped to 20 skiers.
