Description

Tacoma's Pat McMurtry, who was nicknamed “Irish,” became a professional boxer in 1954 and was a sports celebrity in the Pacific Northwest and a top-10 contender. In one of his biggest fights, McMurtry defeated Canadian champ and a rising star George Chuvalo. The fight was in New York City's Madison Square Garden and was shown on national television. Chuvalo would later lose to Mchammad Ali, Joe Frazier, George Foreman and Floyd Patterson. McMurtry turned down his only opportunity to fight Patterson, which would have given him a shot at the heavyweight crowd. It's a decision he later regretted.
