Description

Jim Fifer poses for a picture with his oar. The Stadium graduate won a rowing gold medal in the coxless pair race at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne with Duvall Hecht of California. It was a significant improvement for the Stanford teammates who participated in the coxed pairs at the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki, where they lost in the semifinals. In 1956, Fifer and Hecht defeated defending Olympic champs Chuck Price and Charles Logg to qualify for the Games. Fifer died in 1986 at the age of 55.
