Photo - 1948 Rockets. Coach Muzz Patrick (top row, left side), pictured with the 1948 Tacoma Rockets hockey team, had an extensive hockey career in New York before coaching the Rockets. He was a versatile athlete in his youth in Canada, excelling in track, basketball, football, cycling, boxing and hockey — even earning an amateur light heavyweight title. Patrick, whose father was Lester Patrick the original coach and General Manager of the New York Rangers (NHL), played the 1938 season for the Rangers as earned a Stanley Cup Championship in 1939-40. His career was paused by he enlisted in the U.S. Army during WWII and returned to play 24 games for the Rangers before heading to the minors including in Tacoma. The Rockets were a professional team that played in Tacoma from 1946 to 1953. Tacoma played in the Pacific Coast Hockey League until becoming a member of the Western Hockey League during the 1952-53 season and relocated to the Tacoma Ice Palace. Patrick moved to the WHL’s Seattle Bombers when the Rockets were disbanded.
