Description

Bremerton native John Jarstad made a mark on the region in print and broadcast journalism. Jarstad was on the Tacoma City Council in the 1960s and 1970s and served a term as Tacoma's deputy mayor. Jarstad ran for U.S. Congress in 1970 and was chairman of the Pierce County bicentennial celebration in 1976. Jarstad, who attended South Kitsap High and Washington State University, was sports editor of the Bremerton Sun and wrote a popular "Time Out" column about local athletes. Jarstad was the voice of the Bremerton Bluejackets baseball team of the Western International League from 1946-49 on KBRO-AM. After getting a master's degree from Syracuse University, Jarstad was the TV broadcaster for the Seattle Rainiers of the Pacific Coast League and hosted a sport fishing show on KOMO-TV in the 1950s and 1960s.
