Freddie Steele (left) and Dr. Charles Larson talked with each other at the annual Tacoma Athletic Commission's sports hall of fame induction in 1960. Steele and Larson are both boxing legions. Steele, who was born in Seattle in 1912, was the world middleweight champ from 1936 to 1938. Steele was nicknamed “The Tacoma Assassin” and when his boxing career ended he appeared in a number of Hollywood movies. After a few professional boxing matches, Larson changed his career direction and moved toward a medical career. He remained involved in the Golden Gloves and nationally as a ring physician and boxing judge. His strong influence in boxing made Tacoma and the Northwest an important boxing venue.
