Description

Gerry Lindgren, left, was on his way to becoming an American running legend when he posed for this picture with actor Andy Devine at a Tacoma Athletic Commission state Hall of Fame event in 1961. Lindgren broke the national high school mile record with a time of 4 minutes, 1.5 seconds in 1964 while running at Rogers High in Spokane. He set national high school records in the 5,000-meters (13:44) and indoor 2-mile record (8:40) that same year. He finished ninth (despite injuring his ankle) in the 10,000 meters at the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo. He won 11 NCAA cross country and track titles racing for Washington State University, 1965-69. After his running career he briefly lived in Tacoma and opened a running store called Gerry Lindgren’s Stinky Foot.
