Description

Former Tacoma Athletic Commission presidents Clay Huntington, left, and Dillard Howell shake hands while holding a plaque at the Washington State Hall of Fame induction ceremony in 1966. Huntington was an accomplished local sportscaster who helped form the state hall of fame. Howell owned Dill Howell Sporting Goods in Tacoma and supported many local sports programs. High school, the College of Puget Sound (now University of Puget Sound) and Pacific Lutheran College (now Pacific Lutheran University) were among those who relied on the store for uniforms. Several local awards still bear his name including the Dill Howell Award for Most Improved Athlete at UPS. The Tacoma-Pierce County Baseball-Softball Oldtimers Association gives the Dill Howell Award each year to a person who “exemplifies Dill Howell's passion, commitment, and continued support for baseball in the Tacoma-Pierce County community.”
