Description

Brian Sternberg receives 1963 Washington Athlete of the Year honors at a Tacoma Athletic Commission event. Sternberg graduated from Shoreline High and attended the University of Washington. He won an NCAA title in the pole vault and twice set world records. His career-best jump of 16 feet, 8 inches came five weeks before a trampoline accident left him paralized from the neck down. Despite a poor prognosis, he survived and lived until 2013. He was inducted into the state Hall of Fame in 1980. Also pictured are Tacoma sportscaster Clay Huntington, George Prescott and Marv Tommervik.
