Washington sports legends Rick Redman, left, Gerry Lindgren and Mel Stottlemyre were honored at the state Hall of Fame ceremony hosted by the Tacoma Athletic Commission in 1965. Redman was an All-American linebacker at the University of Washington who was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1995. He played for the San Diego Chargers. Lindgren was a U.S. running legend who set national high school records in the mile, 5,000 meters and 2-mile while running at Spokane’s Rogers High. He won 11 NCAA titles at Washington State University and competed in the ‘64 Olympics. Mel Stottlemyre was an all-star New York Yankees pitcher who grew up in the Yakima area (attending Mabton High and Yakima Community College). He played 11 seasons (164-139, 2.97 ERA) with the Yankees. He coached 23 seasons with the Yankees, New York Mets, Houston Astros and Seattle Mariners and won five World Series.
