Clay Huntington and Tom Cross stand near the finish line of annual "Sound to Narrows" race in the 1970s. Cross was Pierce County's first Parks and Recreation director, serving from 1958-71. Huntington was a Tacoma sports broadcaster for more than 40 years, serving as the voice of the Tacoma Tigers of the Western International League from 1946-51 and doing color commentary for the Tacoma Rockets hockey club in the 1940s and 1950s. Huntington also was a sportswriter for the Tacoma Times newspaper and initiated the Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame in 1957. Huntington was one of the founders of the Tacoma Athletic Commission, serving two terms as president. Huntington was one of the key figures in bringing Pacific Coast League baseball back to Tacoma in 1960.
