Description

Broadcaster Clay Huntington, a Lincoln High School graduate, sits near a microphone for KTBI-AM in 1946. Huntington had a wide-ranging impact on sports in the Tacoma area. Huntington was the voice of the Tacoma Tigers baseball team of the Western International League from 1946-51 and the Tacoma Rockets hockey team in the 1940s and 1950s. Huntington helped fund the construction of Cheney Stadium, leading the way for professional baseball to return to Tacoma. Huntington was a charter member of the Tacoma Athletic Commission, which was a key force in the building of the Tacoma Dome in the 1980s. Huntington founded the Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame and the State of Washington Sports Hall of Fame, and was co-founder of the Shanaman Sports Museum of Tacoma-Pierce County. Huntington created and operated KLAY-AM, which broadcasts local high school and college sports. During the 1950s, Huntington and broadcast partner Rod Belcher re-created Major League Baseball games over a 14-station network in Washington, Oregon and Alaska.
