Description

The Spud’s Pizza Pete women’s softball team was first formed in the spring of 1965 at the Cage Tavern, when Spud Hansen and Harley Otis posted a turnout schedule in the tavern. More than 30 players met for the first practice as the majority of the players came from a recently disbanded women’s fastpitch team. Hansen and Otis made a promise to fund the team if it went undefeated and qualified for nationals. The team, known as The Cage, responded and went 22-0 and headed to the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) National Championships in Omaha, Nebraska. In their first game, the Tacoma-based team lost to Cleveland Music 5-2 in the rain, then lost to a team from Omaha 14-12 after a 12:20 a.m. start due to rain delays. The team from Tacoma was honored by the tournament for being the first team from the West Coast to play in a women’s national tournament and traveling the furthest — 1,700 miles. The team was renamed the Spud’s Pizza Pete in 1966 and played together for another six years. The team compiled a 381-20 record from 1965-71 and won seven consecutive state championships.
