Description

Here is a black-and-white photo of six members of the Tacoma Athletic Commission. They are: standing, George Sheriden, unidentified, John Heinrick, Del Smith, Bill Gazecki and Dill Howell. Heinrick was a legendary coach and he coached football, basketball and baseball in high school and college. His commitment spread over 51 years as a coach, umpire and athletic director. He began his successful coaching career at St. Leo's High School, which is now Bellarmine Prep, and coached there from 1927 to 1934. In 1945, he became the basketball coach at the College of Puget Sound while still coaching football at Stadium High School. He led CPS to a league title in 1948. He is considered to be one of the all-time great coaches in Tacoma. He was inducted in the Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame in 1959.
