Description

The 1980 Tacoma Tigers baseball team poses for a team photo. In the middle row, there's Stan Naccarato, a successful Tacoma businessman who played a major role in keeping a Triple A team in Tacoma. Naccarato, a 1946 graduate from Clover Park High School, lost only one game his senior year in high school and was signed by Cincinnati after graduating. He pitched for the Ogden Reds in the Pioneer League and compiled a 33-10 record. But an arm injury ended his career and he returned to Tacoma and became a major sports booster. In 1979 when the Cleveland Indians assumed the affiliation of the Tacoma Triple-A team, Tacoma had a contest to change the mascot and it changed to the Tugs and the team was renamed the Tacoma Tugs. But after one season, the team returned to the Tigers nickname in 1980. Kevin Rhomberg, a 14th round draft pick by the Cleveland Indians in 1977, played left field for the 1980 Tacoma team. In June 1982, he made his major league debut with the Cleveland Indians. But his major league career was brief as he played in only 41 games. Bob Allietta, a first-round draft pick by the California Angels in 1971, played catcher for this 1980 Tacoma team. His major league career was limited to just 21 games. Tom Brennan was another player on this Tacoma team that reached the major leagues. The right-handed pitcher threw for the Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1981 to 1985. Brennan had a unique pitching style. In his wind-up, he'd freeze and hold his left leg in the air for several seconds and then make a submarine-style delivery. Rafael Vasquez was another pitcher on this Tacoma team who pitched in the major leagues. He pitched in nine games for the Seattle Mariners in 1979. Del Alston was another player on this Tacoma team that played in the major leagues. He played outfield for the New York Yankees, Oakland Athletics and Cleveland Indians. His career average in the major leagues was .238. Don Collins pitched for Atlanta Braves in 1977 and then after pitching for Tacoma in 1980 he pitched for the Cleveland Indians in that season. The color team photo is compliments of Pederson's Fryer Farms and Sams Tire Service.
