Description

In this black-and-white photo taken in 1939, Herm Reich is seated with two teammates and two young girls and their families in the grandstands of the Tacoma Tigers. One girl lies in a wheelchair bed. Reich is on the left and other Tigers with him are (from left to right) Floyd "Lefty" Isekite and Bob Garretson. The Tacoma Tigers played in the Western International League back then and in 1940 they finished 72-72, fourth in the league. Garretson and Hal Rhyne were the Tigers' managers. Reich played first base and right field for the Tigers and in 1949 he had a brief moment in the major leagues. He played for three major league teams in 1949, playing briefly for the Washington Senators, the Cleveland Indians and the Chicago Cubs. When the season was over, Reich was traded to the Chicago White Sox, but he played in the minor leagues and didn't return to the major leagues. Isekite, who threw left handed, is unquestionable the strikeout king in Tacoma baseball. He played for the Tacoma from 1937 to 1940 and made the All-Star team three times. This 1939 photo was donated to the Shanaman Sports Museum by Reich.
