With his fists wrapped in tape, Mike McMurtry shadow boxes as he gets his photo taken wearing his Idaho State College jersey. In 1954, Mike won the NCAA heavyweight title while boxing for Idaho State. In the lower photo, Mike's older brother, Pat “Irish” McMurtry, holds a pose of him boxing. These two brothers are considered to be the best boxers to come out of Tacoma and they have both been inducted into the Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame. Mike won 207 of his 214 amateur fights. Pat posted a 103-2 record as an amateur before turning pro in 1954 and went 33-4-1, winning his first 16 fights. He was one of the biggest sports celebrities of the Northwest during the 1950s
