Description

Tacoma's Joe Waterman (right) stands with legendary boxer Jack Dempsey, who was the heavyweight champ of the world from 1919 to 1926. Waterman began boxing at 13 and when he graduated from high school he joined the Navy and continued to box. After serving in World War I, Waterman returned to Tacoma and in the early 1920s he began to promote and manage boxers in Tacoma. By 1924, Waterman helped create the Kay Street Athletic Club. Eventually, Waterman got involved with a young and promising talent, Freddie Steele, who'd go on to become the light-heavyweight champion of the world.
