Description

This is a black-and-white photo of the six winners of the Tacoma Athletic Commission's salmon derby fundraiser back in the 1960s. The salmon derbys were part of TAC's fundraising to support local youth sports. Since 1945, the TAC has been a major supporter of amateur sports and the youth in Pierce County. With a membership of now more than 275 enthusiastic supporters, they have raised and donated more than $6 million to local sports programs over the years. The TAC is dedicated to youth and sports and stages awards ceremonies for local high school and college athletes. A popular, ongoing presentation has been the annual Athlete of the Year awards that are given in 23 sports at 34 high schools. More than 700 student-athletes, families and friends gather quarterly to celebrate the academic and athletic awards that are presented the TAC. The TAC is actively involved in youth sports with volunteers, financial assistance, publicity, encouragement and support.
