Description

Icicles dangle from pilings and a blanket of snow covers the ground outside the Top of the Ocean at 2211 Ruston Way in Tacoma. Top of the Ocean was a popular club and restaurant designed by Charles Alonzo Kenworthy to resemble a luxury ocean liner. The Tacoma Athletic Commission purchased the facility in 1948. The TAC used The Top as its headquarters until 1951. In 1977, a fire set by an arsonist extensively damaged the structure. In 2007, a bronze monument honoring the Top of the Ocean was installed at the site. The TAC was among the sponsors.
