Tacoma legend Ben Cheney was known to sponsor many competitive independent sports teams including the Cheney Studs AAU basketball team. The Cheney Studs were usually comprised of former college players, who later became some the preeminent coaches in Washington state history. Ron Billings was the head coach of the Cheney Studs.
