Description

Pictured wearing their Cheney Studs pinstriped uniforms, left to right, baseball players Hal Dodeward, Mike Carnehan, Larry Loughlin, and Andy Erickson. The foursome was the pitching staff for the 1961 Studs team that went 52-6 for the season. Dodeward led the staff with a record of 6-1 and a 0.83 ERA. Erickson was 13-1 with a 1.32 ERA, Geiger (9-1) and Loughlin (6-0) each finished with a 1.91 ERA. The 1960’s Cheney Studs American Legion teams were some of the best in the Pacific Northwest. The Studs were one of the top amateur baseball teams in the nation, winning the American Amateur Baseball Congress (AABC) national championship in 1960. Founder and philanthropist Ben Cheney was an avid baseball fan but grew up in a low-income family and couldn’t afford his own gear. Cheney worked to grow his own successful business in Tacoma, the Cheney Lumber Company, and began to sponsor youth sports programs for boys and girls until his death in 1971. The photograph was donated to this museum by Gene Anderson.
