Description

Four team members of the Cheney Studs baseball team, Jack Murphy, Bob Dougall, an unidentified player, and Andy Garnes, are all smiles. Within the Studs organization, Garnes served as coach of the 1959 American Legion Junior Cheney Studs, and Murphy served as assistant coach. The Studs were part of a lager organization that included pee wee football, hockey and basketball at various divisions. Founder and philanthropist Ben Cheney was an avid baseball fan but grew up in a low-income family and couldn’t afford his own gear. Cheney worked to grow his own successful business in Tacoma, the Cheney Lumber Company, and began to sponsor youth sports programs for boys and girls until his death in 1971. The photograph was donated to this museum by Gene Anderson.
