Description

The 1955 Cheney Studs baseball team is shown from the dugout in Battle Creek, Michigan at the American Amateur Baseball Congress national championship. General manager Gene Anderson and team founder and philanthropist Ben Cheney are shown on the bench. Tacoma baseball fans enjoyed an era of high-level amateur baseball thanks to the Cheney Studs organization. The Studs were runner-up at the national tournament in Michigan and finished the season 49-14. They won the Cascade League, Washington State and Northwest AABC Regional championships. Cheney was an avid baseball fan but grew up in a low-income family and couldn’t afford his own gear. Cheney worked to grow his own successful business in Tacoma, the Cheney Lumber Company, and began to sponsor youth sports programs for boys and girls until his death in 1971. The photograph was donated to this museum by Gene Anderson.
