Description

The 14 and under 1955 Cheney Studs baseball team was part of a larger youth, amateur and semi-pro organization founded by Ben Cheney, a Tacoma businessman and philanthropist. The Studs were part of a lager organization that included pee wee football, hockey and basketball at various divisions. Cheney was an avid baseball fan but grew up in a low-income family and couldn’t afford his own gear. Cheney worked to grow his own successful business in Tacoma, the Cheney Lumber Company, and began to sponsor youth sports programs for boys and girls until his death in 1971. The photograph was donated to this museum by Gene Anderson, pictured on the right. Anderson served as founder and philanthropist Ben Cheney’s right-hand man. Anderson was general manager, business manager and secretary from 1955-1981. Anderson began his employment with Cheney at the Cheney Lumber Company in the late 1950s and unselfishly devoted his time to the Studs organization for more than 25 years. Anderson was an integral member of the Studs’ 1960 AABC National Championship team.
