Description

Former Toronto Blue Jays broadcaster Jerry Howarth signed this picture, "Hi Tacoma -- thanks for the memories! 1973-75 Blue Jays radio" Howarth started his broadcasting career in 1974 with the Tacoma Twins of the Pacific Coast League. Howarth also broadcast University of Puget Sound football and basketball games. Howarth left Tacoma to become the play-by-play announcer for the Salt Lake City Gulls of the Pacific Coast League. After a short stint as the play-by-play announcer for the Utah Pros of the Western Basketball Association, Howarth was the group sales director for the NBA's Utah Jazz then became a sports talk show host for KWMS-AM in Salt Lake City. Howarth split his work between Salt Lake City and the Toronto Blue Jays in 1981. He became a full-time Blue Jays broadcaster the next season. He was paired with Tom Cheek to form a "Tom and Jerry" broadcasting team. Howarth received the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame's Jack Graney Award in 2012 for his contributions to baseball in Canada. In 1992, Howarth started not using team nicknames or expressions considered to be offensive to aboriginal Canadians or Native Americans. Howarth retired from broadcasting prior to the 2018 baseball season.
