Description

A drawing of SPIRE Rock by Dee Molenaar. During a lifetime in the mountains, Molenaar carved out a reputation as a talented mountaineer and artist. He is perhaps best known for his 1971 book “The Challenge of Rainier,” which chronicled the climbing history of Mount Rainier and included much of his artwork. SPIRE Rock at Spanaway’s Sprinker Recreation Center is a location where many have trained to take on some of Rainier’s technical challenges. Built in 1971, the outdoor climbing rock is formally known as Spanaway Ice & Rock Education. The facility was built entirely by volunteers and includes a neighboring rock designed to practice glacier travel.
