A sketch of SPIRE Rock by accomplished mountaineer, cartographer and artist Dee Molenaar. The Spanaway Ice and Rock Education outdoor climbing facility opened at Sprinker Recreation Center in 1976 and was built entirely by volunteers. Wayne Cooke served as the chairperson for the committee that spearheaded the project. Climbers designed SPIRE Rock as a place to hone their skills. Thousands of volunteer hours were needed to finish the project and to maintain it over the years. SPIRE Rock cost $4,016, according to Pierce County Parks and Recreation, a fraction of what it would have cost had the work been contracted out.Lexicon
