Description

A Dee Molenaar sketch of the Spanaway Ice and Rock Education climbing facility at Sprinker Recreation Center. Volunteers built the climbing facility, more commonly referred to as SPIRE Rock, in 1976 for $4,016. Boy Scouts of America, Tacoma Mountaineers, Tacoma Mountain Rescue and Safeco were among groups that donated volunteer hours and/or money to the project. The U.S. Army contributed help and the use of a crane and the Corps of Engineers. Molenaar, an accomplished mountaineer and artist, is a former park ranger and mountain guide at Mount Rainier and has climbed peaks throughout the world. His artwork and maps have appeared in books and art shows. His 1971 book “The Challenge of Rainier” is considered the definitive work on the climbing history of Mount Rainier.
