Description

Skiers line up at Paradise waiting for their turn to ride a lift up the slopes. Tacoma’s Jim Parker and Chauncy Griggs installed the first rope tow at Paradise in 1937. The 1,000-foot lift hauled about 250 skiers per hour up 300 feet. Skiers paid 10 cents per ride or $1 for the day. The temporary lifts were removed each spring, but the park eventually stopped allowing the lifts in an effort to preserve the natural setting. Today only two national parks - Yosemite and Olympic - still offer lift-serviced skiing.
