Description

Skiers begin the Silver Skis Race that went down the slopes of Mount Rainier in this black-and-white photo taken on April 22, 1934. The race began at Camp Muir at 10,000 feet and finished at Paradise at 5,400 feet. This photo is taken at the the first of the Silver Skis races and there were 60 racers who lined up across the steep slope at Camp Muir to start the race. But only 40 finished and skiers would reach speeds of 60 miles an hour. The Pacific Northwest Ski Association endorsed the event. One skier in the race one year did a high-speed somersault and broke a ski and lost both poles, but he still finished and placed fifth.
