A group of skiers prepare for the start of the Silver Skis Race in this black-and-white photo taken on Mount Rainier on April 22, 1934. About 60 skiers would race from Camp Muir at 10,000 feet to Paradise at 5,400 feet. Don Fraser, reaching speeds of 60 miles an hour, won the first Silver Skis race that was 3.6 miles with a time of 10 minutes and 49 seconds. Only 44 of the 60 skiers who started the race finished.
