Skiers racing in the annual Silver Skis Race raced down the slopes in this black-and-white photo taken on Mount Rainier on April 22, 1934. It was the first of what became an annual race that lasted until the 1948, drawing the top skiers in the Northwest. The adventuresome Silver Skis Race would draw about 60 skiers and it begin at Camp Muir at 10,000 feet and finish at Paradise at 5,400 feet. Don Fraser was the winner of the first race and finished the race in 10 minutes and 49 seconds, reaching speeds of 60 miles an hour. Only 44 of the 60 skiers who started the challenging race in 1934 finished.Lexicon
