Tacoma’s Gretchen Kunigk Fraser smiles while holding her skis. At the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland, Fraser become the first American to win an Olympic alpine skiing medal. She won a gold (slalom) and silver (alpine combined). Fraser served on the selection committee for Team USA’s 1952 Olympic alpine team. She was inducted into the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame in 1960 and her husband, Don Fraser, was inducted in 1972. Both died in 1994, just 36 days apart.
