Description

A page from the media guide for the 1948-49 Chicago Stags professional basketball team describes former UW star Chuck Gilmur was the most improved player of the previous season in the Basketball Association of America (a forerunner of the modern NBA). It says Gilmur got his opportunity when the Stags traded starting center Chick Halbert to the Philadelphia Warriors early in the season. Gilmur responded by averaging nearly 10 points a game and playing superb defense for Stags. He also set a league record for fouls committed (231), thus earning his nickname, “elbows.” Gilmur had also been the star of the Stags’ upset playoff victory over the Washington Capitols by using his “brainy and aggressive” defense to shut down Washington star Horace “Bones” McKinney. After five seasons in pro basketball, Gilmur spent nearly 30 years coaching and teaching in Tacoma. He coached 14 years at Lincoln High School and another 14 years at Mount Tahoma High School.
