Semi-professional teams like Johnson Paint played highly popular and competitive games before college and NBA games were available regularly on TV and, in Harold “Hal” McClary, the Tacoma team had one of the game’s biggest stars. In a later time “The Stork,” fresh of a standout career at the University of Washington, would likely have been drafted into the professional ranks, but when McClary finished his education in Seattle in 1930, he married his college sweetheart and headed off for a long career in the … wood products industry, where he was no less a leader than he might have been on the court. But he still had some basketball in him and so played many years aside the region’s best players, entertaining full gyms throughout the Puget Sound area and beyond.Lexicon
