Dan Ayrault, Ted Nash, John Sayre and Rusty Wailes pull their way to a gold medal in the coxless fours at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome. Italy was second and the Soviet Union was third. Ayrault spent part of his youth in Tacoma attending Lowell Elementary and Jason Leigh Junior High schools. He also won gold at the ‘56 Olympics in Melbourne rowing in the coxed pairs. Tacoma’s John Sayre attended Clover Park High School. Ted Nash was from Massahusets and Rusty Wailes was from Edmonds, Washington. The team was in last place 500 meters into the gold medal race, but picked up the pace and took the lead in the final 300 meters.
