Even for somebody who lived to be 100, Herman Brix crammed quite a number of accomplishments into his life. Brix was born in Tacoma and graduated from Stadium High, where he was a star athlete and performer. “I had a wonderful youth and a wonderful time at Stadium High School,” Brix told The News Tribune in 2006. “I used to sing. There was always a fight between the music director and the athletic coaches as to who was going to get my time after school. The athletic coaches won most of the time, but I enjoyed singing, too, and played the lead in ‘The Pirates of Penzance.’ I enjoyed it, though the athletic fraternity made a lot of fun of me.” Brix went on to play in a Rose Bowl as a football player at the University of Washington, a silver medal at the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam and then enjoyed a successful career in Hollywood. He starred in “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre” with Humphrey Bogart and Three Stooges shorts, but was probably best known for his critically-acclaimed portrayals of Tarzan in the 1930s. The Tarzan roll left him typecast, so eventually changed his name to Bruce Bennett. Brix died in 2007.Lexicon
