Description

Chuck Richards was a talented swimmer at Stadium High and for the Tacoma Swim Club in the 1960s. He earned a world ranking in long-course swimming and he ranked as high as third nationally. At the University of Indiana, he earned All-America honors twice and made the national finals. His swimming talented, served him well as he competed in the modern pentathlon, a competition that also includes equestrian show jumping, shooting, fencing and running. As a pentathlete, Richards went on to win Army championships and three national titles. He was the top American at the 1972 Munich Olympics where he set the world and Olympic records for the 300-meter pentathlon swim. Richards won the race by nearly six seconds and helped Team USA win the team swim. The Americans finished fourth in the overall modern pentathlon at the Games and Richards was ninth in the individual competition.
