Description

Swimming is where Tacoma’s Chuck Richards performed best during the modern pentathlon at the 1972 Olympics in Munich, Germany. Richards dominated the 300-meter swim in the individual competition on Aug. 30, 1972, in Munich’s Olympia Schwimmhalle. His time of 3 minutes, 21.7 seconds was an Olympic and World record and nearly six seconds faster than the second-place swimmer, Veikko Salminen of Finland. He helped Team USA win the swim in the team competition. His effort wasn’t quite good enough for a medal, however. Once all five events (fencing, shooting, horseback riding and running are the other events) were complete, Richards was ninth overall and Team USA was fourth. As a Stadium High student, Richards won six state championships in swimming. Chuck Richards holds on to the side of the pool with another swimmer in nearby lane.
