Five men wearing suits sport big smiles at an undated Tacoma Athletic Commission Sports Hall of Fame banquet. Pictured from left, Bud Ward, comedian Joe E. Brown, Dr. Herm Dahl, Chuck Congdon and Jack Walters. Ward, an Elma native, won the U.S. Amateur golf tournament in 1939 and 1941 and tied for fourth at the 1939 U.S. Open (Byron Nelson was the winner). During a two-month span in 1941, Ward won the Pacific Northwest Golf Association Men's Amateur and Western Amateur in addition to his U.S. Am victory. He was a member of the 1938 and 1947 Walker Cup teams. Ward, who won 15 tournaments as a professional, is in the Pacific Northwest Golf Hall of Fame, the Pacific Northwest section of the PGA of America Hall of Fame and the State of Washington Sports Hall of Fame. Congdon was the club professional at Tacoma Country & Golf Club from 1935-65 and was vice president of the PGA of America from 1955-57. He was inducted into the State of Washington Sports Hall of Fame in 1978. Dahl and Walters involved with the Tacoma Golf Association. Walters was a multiple winner of the Tacoma City Amateur.
