Description

The race car “Carlie Allen” set a national speed record in 1971 in 227.27 mph in a 1/4-mile event for the Class AA Funny Car division. Featured in the photo, left to right, are Walt Grogan, Chuck Robbins, Dave Grassi and Charlie Allen. Allen, known as the “All American Boy,” was one of the toughest funny car racers of the 1960s and 1970s. Allen began his funny car career with the Super Stock and made the leap to experimental cars not long after. His most famous car was a 1967 Dodge Dart that Allen built. He raced nationwide before retiring in 1972. Allen ran the Orange County International Raceway until it closed in 1983 and then ran the Firebird International in Phoenix, Arizona.
