Description

PGA Tour greats Jack Nicklaus, center front row, and Lee Trevino and Tacoma’s Ken Still smile in a group photo of the 1969 U.S. Ryder Cup team at the airport in September. The Ryder Cup was held at the Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, England, and ended in a tie with 16 points each. Nicklaus conceded a missable three-foot putt to Britain’s Tony Jacklin on the 18 hole. It was the first draw in Ryder Cup history, but the U.S. retained the Cup. Still of Tacoma was an accomplished PGA golfer. Still played professional golf for 23 years on the PGA Tour. He won the Florida Citrus Open, the Greater Milwaukee Open, both in 1969, and the Kaiser Open in 1970. He partnered with Gene Littler to win the CBS Golf Classic in 1970. His best finish in a major was in 1970 when he finished fifth in the U.S. Open, and he had three finishes in the top 25 in that event, making the cut five out of nine attempts. At the Masters, Still charged to contention on the final day of the 1971 tournament. He finished with his best of four rounds, a 69, to tie for sixth. For his career, Still played in six masters, 13 U.S. Opens and seven PGA Championships. Photo donated by Ken Still.
