Description

Here is a black-and-white photo of the 1940 Elks softball fastpitch team. Early Mahnkey played on the Tacoma Elks teams in the 1940s and he was considered to be one of the premier shortstops in the area. The Tacoma Elks are longtime sponsors of softball and have supported sports and teams in Tacoma for more than 60 decades. Until 1956, fastpitch was the only softball game available in Tacoma. Slowpitch began that year when Tom Cross, who was the assistant superintendent of Tacoma's Metroplitan park District, introduced the sport here after he saw it played in Chicago. In the top row, from left to right, the players are Chase Green, Hal Deering, Bob Jepsen, Jerry Turner, Bill Jepsen, Dalton Thorne, Walt Olson and Jack Nash. Bottom Row: L-R. Ted Iversen, Bill Wieking, Hank Peters, Bob McKinnell, Dick Savory, Reggie Johnson and Dick Dexter.
