Description

This black-and-white, aerial photo of Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio, captures the support and fan interest that the national All-American Soap Box Derby drew as racers qualified from across the nation for this annual race in Akron. The race has been held near every year since 1934 and is for kids ages 11 to 17. Tacoma has had two drivers win the national championship. Gregory Schumacher won it 1964 and David Krussow won in 1966. Ronan Johnson of Camano Island won the national championship in 2017, giving Washington its third national champ and first national champion in 51 years. Homemade cars used in this race are moved by gravity, not motors.
