2030LDescription
In a close finish, David Krussow places first in the 1966 Tacoma Soap Box Derby race. Cars in this race do not have motors and are driven by gravity, making the smooth, narrow design crucial. Drivers would tuck down into their cars, just peeking over their cars so they'd reduce wind resistance. Soap Box Derby races were extremely popular during the 1950s and 1960s and as many as 70,000 people gathered at the national championship in Akron, Ohio. The races were also telecast on national TV.Lexicon
