As he take the checker flag at the finish, 14-year-old Gregory Schumacher wins by less than a car length to capture the All-American Soap Box Derby in 1964. Schumacher became the first racer from Washington to win the national championship. The next year at the national championships, Tacoma's Donald Campbell placed fourth and then in 1966 David Krussow of Tacoma won. That gave Tacoma an unprecedented string of three straight racers finishing in the top four. It would be another 50 years before a Washington resident won the championship again. One national champ was crowned each year through 1975.Lexicon
