“Irish” Pat McMurtry takes a right-handed punch to the ribs from famed boxer Charles Norkus in this pro heavyweight fight in the 1950s. Tacoma's Jim Rondeau refereed this fight. Norkus, who was inducted into the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame in 1996, was ranked fifth in the world and fought Archie Moore and Willlie Pastrano and other top ten contenders, including McMurtry. In a strong showing, McMurtry, a Lincoln High School graduate in Tacoma, defeated Norkus, giving him his third straight win. He was awarded with a bout in New York City's Madison Square Garden against George Chuvalo, a young Canadian champ. McMurtry won that fight that was on national TV and he rose back into the top ten rankings.Lexicon
